| Meeting Highlights Seventeen members at our Thursday breakfast meeting, along with two guests: Steve and Miranda from the Hermon Key Club. Milt Kirk was Song Leader, and Larry Smith furnished this Inspirational Bit o’Wisdom: “Stop letting your age dictate your choices. Take action according to how you feel, not according to how society says you should feel based on the number of years you have been alive.”
Sponsored Youth Report Hermon Key Club members will hold their annual “I’ve got a Crush on You” fundraiser from Feb. 6 to Feb. 14. “Change Wars” gets underway in April. They are also planning a “Pennies for Patients” fundraiser to fight cancer, and looking forward to the Key Club District Convention coming up soon.
Welcome Back A warm welcome back to Stacy Buzzell and George Dandaneau, both of whom we haven’t seen in awhile. Stacy promises to make her presence a regular thing from now on. George is recovering from medical issues that have kept him away for awhile. Speaking of George, he was belatedly presented with his award plaque as a recipient of the Gary Leighton Kiwanian of the Year award last Thursday (photo).
Fundraising Milt Kirk reports a total of $4,220 has been raised through the Diners Club project thus far. Coming up: another Nikon Camera raffle.
Community Service Dan
Guerette reports he will be participating in the annual Freezin’ for a Reason, Feb 5 at Camp CaPella, to benefit both
Camp CaPella and Camp Sunshine. Any other volunteers? Dan is collecting
pledges. If you would like your pledge to go to Camp CaPella, give Dan a
call. If you would like to have it go to Camp Sunshine, you can also
contact Dan, or make a direct donation online on Dan’s pledge page. Heating Assistance Raffle underway Our raffle to benefit the Penquis Heating Assistance program is underway. For those who do not already have tickets to sell, Milt has’em. Prizes include lobster dinners from Cap Morell’s, 100 gallons of heating oil from Hermon Oil Company and Black Bear Hockey Skybox tickets from Black Bear Inn. Prizes have bee generously donated, so proceeds from this raffle will all go toward helping someone stay warm this winter. Drawing will be held on February 16.
Kiwanis Kiosk update The Bangor Club is promoting a kiosk at the Bangor International terminal building to help spread the word about area Kiwanis clubs. The kiosk will contain information about our local Kiwanis Clubs, who we are, what we do, where and when we meet. President Jane Newberry of the Bangor Club asked if we would like to join in this effort. See Pres. Jim if you have any ideas and/or would like to help out.
Blast from the Past Now, a look back at the pages of our Weekly Bulletin dated Jan. 22, 1987, twenty-five years ago this week: “AUTOBIOGRAPHY OF THE WEEK. Mike McCarty was called on to give the Club a brief description of himself. Originally from Lewiston, Mike is a graduate of the University of Maine. He lives in Bangor with his wife Jo-Anne and their sons Chris and Michael. He is the Public Affairs Associate at St. Joseph Hospital. He has been a wonderful and very devoted Kiwanian since 1978. (He also writes the weekly Club bulletin). “THE PROGRAM last time featured our very own Harley Soule, with some very interesting statistics about the mini-metropolis of Greater Bangor: (1) Champlain visited the area in 1604. (2) 100,000 people live within a 20-mile radius. (3) The Bangor area ranks second in the state in sales. (4) There are 15 major banks and 60 branch offices in a 20 mile radius of downtown Bangor. (5) There are 15,000 students at post-secondary schools in the area. (6) The Bangor Public Library contains 450,000 volumes and has the highest per-capita circulation in the U.S. (7) The Bangor Daily News is the 4th largest morning daily paper in New England."
Weekly Raffle Now, back to the future: A portable bar donated by Roy Martin fetched a handsome $4 on Thursday in our newly re-instituted weekly raffle. The lucky bidder was Larry Smith (who hinted the prize may hit the auction block again soon!)
The Program Our guest speaker last time was Tracy Ouellette, director of Bangor Parks & Recreation. The department manages a multitude of outdoor facilities in Bangor, he noted, including the City Forest (along with the city’s Forestry Division), the Waterfront park and other municipal parks throughout the City, the Bangor Municipal Golf Course and the Hayford’s Park complex on Union Street, including the Pancoe water complex, Sawyer Arena and Mansfield Stadium (home of the Senior League World Series). All three floors are currently in use by indoor recreation programs at the Department’s headquarters on Main Street. In the works: a new location for the Bangor Band Gazebo, displaced from Bass Park by the Arena construction; and a dog park.
Next Thursday's Program: Melissa Lornez from Extreme Dimensions (maker of digital wildlife calls based in Hampden)
